Whether your family is on a budget or you would simply like to lower your monthly grocery bill there are many easy ways to save money on groceries. You have probably heard about people saving hundreds of dollars per year by using coupons but this is not the only way to save money on your grocery bill. In fact, there are several easier things you can do to reduce your spending on groceries. The following tips will educate you about a few simple things you can do to make big changes in your family budget. Why spend more on groceries when saving money is so easy?

Tips for Saving Money on Groceries- Create a Grocery Budget

If you have not already created a family budget, consider doing so. Having a certain goal in mind each month is very helpful when it comes to controlling your spending. To create a budget for your groceries alone simply keep track of your grocery receipts for a few months (you can do this for a single month if you are in a hurry but the results will be more accurate over a longer period of time). Tally the totals on your receipts to find your average monthly spending on groceries. Then, based on these numbers, decide on a reasonable spending goal and do your best to stay within that limit.

Plan Your Meals in Advance

If you do not have a plan when you get to the grocery store you are more likely to spend extra money on items you don't really need - these are called impulse buys. If you take the time to think about the meals you are going to prepare for the upcoming week then you can head to the store prepared and stave off impulse purchases.

Shop with a List

If you decide to plan your meals a week in advance then creating a shopping list should be easy - all you need to do is put on the list the various ingredients required for the meals you have planned. You should also keep a running list on your refrigerator of things you have run out of or are running low on. Then, when you get to the store, you will know exactly what you need and you will not end up purchasing extra items that you forgot you already had or simply do not need.

Keep an Eye on Store Flyers

If you do not have a favorite grocery store then you will be able to peruse the weekly ads that arrive in your mail and do your weekly shopping based on which store is offering better prices that week. If you do frequent a certain store then you can still use your weekly ads to save money. Compare the store flyer to your shopping list and if there is a sale on an item you frequently buy then you can consider stocking up on that item while it is marked down.

Take Advantage of Price Match Guarantees

Many stores like Walmart offer a "price match guarantee" - that is, they will match a competitor's advertised price for an identical item. This will come in handy if you plan to do all of your shopping at one store but another store has advertised a lower price on certain items. If your favorite store offers a price match guarantee you can do all your shopping in one place and still get the lowest prices.

Buy Local Produce or Grow Your Own

Throughout the summer and fall it is relatively easy to find fresh, local produce. Farmer's markets and local produce stands offer high quality produce, often for prices lower than your favorite grocery store. Another alternative to purchasing produce at the grocery store is to grow your own. Vegetables like tomatoes and carrots are relatively easy to grow and if you are able to grow your own supply of a few vegetables that you use frequently you can save a lot of money - homegrown produce tastes better too!

Clip Coupons

Some people go to the extreme when it comes to using coupons but even if you only use a few coupons on each shopping trip the savings can still ad up. Browse the ads you receive with your paper or look online to find coupons for the items you purchase most frequently. Even coupons that offer only 10 cents or a dollar off can make a difference - every penny counts!

By following some of these tips it is possible to save money on groceries without resorting to extreme coupon clipping. The best thing you can do if you want to reduce your grocery costs is to become aware of how much you are actually spending. If you have a spending goal in mind when you go to the store you will be able to make purchases having that goal in mind. A few simple changes and a little bit of preparation can go a long way when it comes to saving money on groceries. Go forth and achieve some wiggle room in your budget by cutting your monthly grocery costs!
