Dropsy is one of the tropical fish diseases that is most often fatal. If caught early, however, this fish disease can be treated.

Dropsy is an often-fatal disease that commonly effects tropical fish. Characterized by the swelling of the belly and body, dropsy can be caused by many things including kidney trouble, bacterial infections, and poor water quality. Though many fish that contract dropsy die of it, there are some treatments of dropsy that have been known to be effective. The key to treating dropsy successfully, lies in catching the symptoms early, before they can irreparably damage your fish.

Treating dropsy in fish can be tricky, however, because there are several possible causes for this disease and it is hard to discern which is the cause for each particular case. The only way to proceed is to try a variety of treatment methods in the hopes that one of them will prove to be effective.

Dropsy Treatment Step-by-Step

  1. Isolate the sick fish in a hospital tank. To make water changes easier this tank should be bare, except for a filter and heater if necessary, and the temperature should be as close to the original tank as possible.
  2. Create a salt bath by adding no more than 2.5 teaspoons of Epsom salt for every ten gallons of water in the hospital tank. The magnesium sulfate in the Epsom salts may help to draw the excess water out of the fish's body that caused it to swell.
  3. Feed your fish antibacterial fish food. You can either purchase prepared antibiotic fish food or make your own by creating a 1% mixture of fish food and an antibiotic like chloromycetin or tetracycline.
  4. Continue to feed your fish antibiotic fish food and monitor its progress for 7 to 10 days.
  5. If no improvement is seen after several days of treatment, treat the aquarium water with Maracyn Two. This medication is effective against bacterial infections and is absorbed through the skin of fish.

To find out about other treatments for dropsy you can contact your local pet store and seek advice from the professionals there but dropsy is a notoriously difficult disease to cure and other treatments may be just as ineffective.

Even if you are unable to save your fish from this particular case of dropsy you can prevent future occurrences by keeping the water in your tank clean. Perform weekly water changes and avoid overfeeding and overcrowding your fish. Keeping your fish happy is the key to keeping them healthy and high water quality and adequate swimming space for your fish are essential ingredients in the happiness of your aquarium fish.
